  ART WORK

Schedule of Events

The below are all the basic dates pre- and post- the two week residency period. List-based discussion in the preliminary period aim to facilitate interaction before the physical residency has begun – and several possible streams for capturing the environment and work created, will form the raw material for publication documenting the event.

Preliminary hellos...

March: SCANZ site live to the public

A base resource for information on the event and it's various streams. The site will be building throughout the lead-up to the event, to include artist bios, project pages, and links to project blogs where available for individual projects.

4th April: ADA discussion

Introductions of the SCANZ artists on the Aotearoa Digital Arts discussion list. A time and place for all to meet and discuss work in the lead up to the ADA symposium. Discussion commences with overall project aims.

15th June: SCANZ Communication capabilities

ICT Artist in Residence Adam Hyde arrives to secure three strands of communication are robust – streaming, Skype or other web video/audio package and chatroom – these will run simultaneously at specific times during SCANZ.

30th June - 1st July: Workshop & Performance at MIC

Derek Holzer & Sara Kolster are invited to give a 2-day Pure Data workshop at the Moving Image Centre in Auckland. Targeted at the DJ/VJ community in Auckland, the workshop will be followed by an evening performance on the 1st of July which will also include work by Adam Hyde.

Residency begins...

2nd July: Arrival in New Plymouth

The artists arrive in New Plymouth, and settle into either vacant student accommodation or motor camp cabins (some share).

3rd July: Powhiri (welcoming)

Followed by an introduction to facilities and computer labs at WITT.
Visit to Parihaka, Puke Ariki and Govett-Brewster Art Gallery.

3rd – 5th July: Artist talks/project presentations

As first introductions will have occurred via the ADA list-based discussions, these initial sessions are likely to be more of a demonstration of an artist's practise and/or SCANZ project, which will include a time for more direct questions, feedback and exchange.

5th – 7th July:Workshops/project activity/exchange

Workshops at Solar/Polar circuits are self-organised by the artists. There is a free flow between what the perceived needs are and where expertise lies, and some interactions occur spontaneously.

8th July:  Trip to Mt Taranaki

This is a weather dependent group trip. C5 might have already been on Taranaki as part of their project.

9th July: Climb of Paritutu rock/beach trip/skiing

Paritutu affords spectacular 360 degree views of landscape and sea. The New Plymouth waterfront and 8km walkway consists of beaches from stony to black or white sand. Some participants may also want to take in skiing.

10th – 14th July: Workshops/project activity/exchange

Some projects are able to be completed within the two week period. With all the artists together, it is notable that in previous Solar Circuits quite a bit of work was achieved, with most artists working quite hard on projects, frequently running into the night.

15th July: Aotearoa Digital Artists Symposium

The ADA symposium provides a focus for practitioners and theorists throughout New Zealand. The coincidence of SCANZ will sharpen that focus around issues in international practice where these intersect issues in national practice. It is anticipated that there will be no boundaries between the two events on this weekend.

Performance/presentation evening at Govett-Brewster Art Gallery

Presentations of projects will be held in the Auditorium of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery. The evening will also be comprised of performances from groups such as Avatar Body Collision, as well as static, audio and video projects.

16th July: ADA symposium day two, SCANZ/ADA Wrap

The final day of the workshop is an opportunity to finish off work, show and tell works in process. Discussion will centre around how participants have felt the event went, linkages, networks and the future, will also take place.

Post Event Resources

August 2006: Post event website launch

After the residency, a post-event website will be launched as an ongoing document of SCANZ. This will be a research tool.

February 2007: SCANZ the book launched

There are plans for a publication following the event given the outstanding selection of international and Aotearoa New Zealand artists. Material for the book will be derived from an accumulation of documentation and artist submissions gathered. The book will be printed and bound using digital methodology, whereby a short edition (100 copies) for distribution to artists and libraries will be printed, and orders taken thereafter.
